Turbine lube-oil systems are designed to cool bearings, flush contaminants away from rotating parts, prevent leakage of gases, provide hydrostatic lift for shafts and actuating valves in the hydraulic circuit and protect lube-system internals. Turbine oil formulations must handle large temperature fluctuations and the ingression of contaminants such as dirt and water. Monitoring in-service turbine oil condition for deterioration and degradation can significantly extend the life of both the lubricant and the turbine

The key to efficient turbine maintenance is routine monitoring of the oil, which ensures that decisions involving the turbine, including scheduling of oil changes and other maintenance, are based on what is actually happening inside the unit, instead of the number of hours, days or years of operation. Routine and in-depth monitoring can provide warning signs early enough to take corrective action.

What is Lube Oil Varnish?

Varnish is an insoluble film composed primarily of organic residue that coats the internal components of machines lubrication systems. Often comprised of degradation products associated with oxidation or thermal degradation, these soft contaminants are less than 1 micrometer in size.

Causes of Lube Oil VarnishOxidationa chemical reaction of an oil molecule with oxygen to produce carboxylic acids.Thermal degradationa chemical change in the base oil molecules under elevated temperature.Varnish Potential Analysis

Varnish is an insoluble film that coats the internal components of machinery lubrication systems. The specific lubricant degradation byproducts associated with varnish formation remain elusive so is the need for the special test for finding the VPI ( Varnish Potential Index).

Petrolab offers two packages for turbine oil testing – PEAS – Turbine Oil Quality (Annual) PEAS – Turbine oil monitoring ( Quarterly) confirms to ASTM D4378

Benefits of Varnish Potential Analysis Testing
  • Alerts customers of developing lube oil varnish problems
  • Measures oil’s propensity to drop out varnish deposits
  • Promotes proactive maintenance and contamination control
  • Provides turbine users confidence at start up
Damage Done By Lube Oil VarnishReduced clearance zones affecting lubrication regimes

Often, this means a transition from hydrodynamic lubrication to boundary lubrication, which increases wear rates of pumps, bearings and gears.

Increased friction in componentsThis friction will result in higher energy requirements and can cause valves to stick or seize.Higher operating temperatures

Varnish acts as an insulator, lowering the effect of heat exchangers and lessening the ability of the lubricant to cool. The impact of friction and reduced clearance zones also contribute to higher temperatures

Restriction or impedance of oil flow

Varnish can cause valves, strainers and filters to clog.

Increased wear rates

Varnish captures hard contaminants creating an abrasive surface that will accelerate wear. Varnished surfaces often appear like sandpaper when examined under a microscope.

petrolab Quenching oils are mainly used in the Steel Industry to facilitate hardening of metal by controlling heat transfer during quenching. It also enhances wetting of the metal during quenching to minimize the formation of undesirable thermal and transformational gradients which may lead to increased distortion and cracking.

Quenching oil is required to be monitored regularly to monitor degradation. Oil degradation of Quenching fluids is often accompanied by sedimentation and sludge formation. This sludge / varnish restrict the proper hardening of metal component & lead to defects on the metal surface.

Historically, the analysis of grease has been confined to new grease testing for product acceptance and quality control. Technically, this was due to the sample size required to perform conventional ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) methods on grease samples. However, over the last couple of decades, new analytical methods have made it possible to profile the serviceability of grease using as few milligrams of sample as possible (0.00003527 of an ounce).

Petrolab offers comprehensive testing for grease testing.

A hydraulic system transfers force from one point to another point using an incompressible (hydraulic) fluid. To ensure that the fluid functions properly, it is crucial that it remains free of contaminants and particles. In fact, particle contamination is the single most common cause of hydraulic system failure. Dirt-laden fluids in any moving engine part may cause damage to the fine tolerances of valves, motors, and hydraulic systems.

Fluid analysis is essential to keep your hydraulic system operating efficiently and effectively. Considering 80% of all hydraulic system failures are caused by poor fluid condition, an effective fluid analysis program will help identify contamination and other problems not visible to the naked eye.

Oil analysis can be an extremely viable means for preventing gearbox failure, reducing downtime and controlling maintenance costs in both industrial and heavy duty applications. Gearboxes are often critical to production in any application and can prove very costly in the event of unplanned downtime and the associated losses in productivity. Implementing a routine oil analysis program to monitor gearbox wear and contamination can prove to be an extremely viable means for preventing gearbox failure, reducing downtime and controlling maintenance costs. Although these systems are typically thought to be capable of enduring higher concentrations of wear and contamination than turbines or hydraulic systems, the bearings are not. The wearing of metal surfaces, caused by various forms of contamination, can cause bearing failure, which can adversely affect gear shaft alignment and eventually cause the entire gear system to fail. The most significant differences are in testing industrial gearbox oils for viscosity at 40°C and Total Acid Number vs. viscosity at 100°C and Total Base Number in heavy duty applications. To determine the presence of wear debris and to identify the type of wear occurring, testing should include Particle Count and Direct Read Ferrography as well as Analytical Ferrography to qualify the type of wear and its possible sources. Ferrography TestingThe Analytical Ferrography test isolates wear debris and solid particulates for examination under a microscope

Analytical Ferrography is among the most powerful diagnostic tools in oil analysis today. When implemented correctly it is an excellent tool when attempting to diagnose an active wear problem. Analytical Ferrography allows an oil analyst to visually examine wear particles present in a sample. This test separates solid contamination and wear debris from a lubricant for microscopic evaluation. Analytical Ferrography can identify wear particles, their composition, and their origin by visually analyzing them microscopically.

This test is qualitative, which means it relies on the skill and knowledge of the ferrographic analyst. While this can have definite advantages, the interpretation is somewhat subjective and requires detailed knowledge of wear debris failure modes. The test procedure is also lengthy and requires the skill of a trained ferrographic analyst.

Monitoring compressor oil contamination and component wear should include testing viscosity, total acid number, particle count, water separability and analytical Ferrography to effectively predict component failure

Rotary Screw Compressors

The bearings and gears within rotary screw compressors require proper lubrication for metal protection, cooling and optimum rotor performance. High operating temperatures and water ingression can cause oxidation that can be damaging to metal surfaces. Compressors operating under these conditions typically use synthetic oils with additive packages that resist oxidation and prevent the formation of acids caused by lubricant degradation.

Reciprocating Compressors

Reciprocating compressors are highly efficient at attaining high pressures but are significantly larger and more difficult to maintain than rotary screw compressors. These units require lubricants with high thermal stability and the ability to control the formation of degradation deposits on metal surfaces

Centrifugal Compressors

Centrifugal compressors operate at high speeds with a low tolerance for contamination ingression which can quickly cause severe damage to internal components – bearings, gears, impellers. Testing should be done to confirm that the correct lubricant type and grade is in use and to monitor its condition to prevent the formation of varnish and other degradation deposits.
